I’m kinda bummed. I happened on this totally by chance after thinking to myself that I needed to blog something.

James Oliver Rigney Jr., an author who went by the penname Robert Jordan, died today at the age of 58. From Wikipedia, the cause stated is primary amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy (cardiac amyloidosis). I have no idea what these terms mean.

Jordan is the author of the wildly popular, wildly long, and rumored to have been fast coming to a close Wheel of Time series. The series is 11 volumes right now, and a 12th and supposedly final volume called A Memory of Light was in the works. He also wrote several Conan novels in the early-mid 1980s.

(Kate’s more eloquent.)

  1. I’m bummed, too. I also think you were perfectly eloquent.

My copy of the 11th book just arrived from Amazon yesterday. I’d put off buying it on the grounds that “heck, he’ll find a way to get through this” with his health problems, and also because I prefer to read paperbacks when I’m in bed.

When it arrived yesterday, I wanted to hurry through it so I’d be ready when the 12th book came out. I stayed up late last night reading… only to learn this evening of his death.

It’s going to feel mighty strange tonight to open that book, and yet it’s comforting, too. The Wheel Turns and Ages come to pass, leaving memories that become Legend.

He’s a legend in my mind.
