As previously noted, We picked up an XBox 360 a couple of weeks ago. I’ve gotten a few games since then, notably Gears of War, which has been the “Killer game” of the 360, and Halo, which was THE game for the original XBox.
Gears takes the cake.
I won’t compare graphics in this one. It simply isn’t fair. Halo was absolutely beautiful, back in 2001. Gears is stunning, and puts Halo to shame. That’s expected.
What impresses me more with Gears is the combat. In Halo, much like in any other shoot-em-up game, you’re encouraged to run and gun, bum-rush the enemy, guns blazing, and damn the consequences. In Gears, if you don’t utilize the cover available to you in the terrain, you’re toast. The first “boss battle” is with a Berzerker, who is impervoius to your guns, and blind, but can hear and smell you acutely. One hit from her and you’re dead. Your only chance is to lure the beastie into smashing three successive doors, leading into smaller chambers, and finally outdoors where you use laser-guided weaponry to finally cook it.
The story behind your character unfolds little-by-little as the game progresses. The game starts when you’re being broken out from a prison, and as time passes, you find that you were branded a traitor, though in your POV it was unfair. I’m about 30% of the way in, and am still learning why.
Of course, the story isn’t important… go whip some baddie butt!
